Litany for Theological Educators

This weekend, I was a presenter at the ATS Roundtable Seminar for Newly Appointed Faculty. I was invited to offer this morning’s opening prayer. I wrote this litany and invited participants to call the names of those who have been part of their journey.

Litany for Theological Educators
One:  We remember the early teachers, coaches, and nurturers those who saw the spark within us and affirmed our gifts.
We call your names:
Pause
All:  Amen.

One:  We remember the loved ones who sewed costumes, helped with science fair projects, chaperoned field trips, and sacrificed so that we would have opportunities that they did not.
We call your names:
Pause
Alll:     Amen

One:  We remember the misfits, oddballs, eggheads, nerds, blerds, and geeks who understood us and welcomed us to the clubhouse.
We call your names:
Pause
All:  Amen.

One:  We remember the men and women who taught us texts and traditions and who modeled for us faith in action.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  We remember those who started us on this path with the book, article, or conversation that changed our lives.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  We remember the teachers, advisors, and mentors who made a phone call, wrote a letter, or sent an email that made a difference.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  We remember the pioneers, scientists, scholars, and the real and mythical heroes who inspire us.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  We remember the dedicated editors, librarians, and support staff who make our burdens lighter.
We call your names:

One:  We remember the unforgettable students who amaze, challenge, and teach us.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  We remember those who console us when we are harassed, insulted, passed over, and rejected and who celebrate with us when we are accepted, invited, promoted, and tenured.
We call your names:

All:  Amen.

One:  May our teaching be transformative; May our service be gratifying; May our research be innovative; And may we remember those who are part of our journey as theological educators.
