Our Nig was published in 1859 by Harriet E. Wilson. The full title of the book is Our Nig; or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, In a Two-Story White House, North. Showing that Slavery's Shadows Fall Even There. Wilson was the first African American to publish a novel in the U.S. Her fictional autobiography remained relatively unknown until it was "rediscovered" by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in 1982.
