The Other Side

I am attending the Old Testament Research Colloquium today at Princeton Theological Seminary. Someone presents a work in progress, and someone offers a prepared response. Then, everyone participates in an open discussion.

When I was a doctoral student at PTS, attendance at OTRC was mandatory. Back then, I shuffled in and tried to find a seat in the back. I was sleep-deprived. I had only skimmed the reading. I hoped that no one would call on me. I prayed that no one would ask me to present.

Now, I stroll in offering hugs and air kisses. I chit-chat and share the latest academic gossip news. I participate in the discussion. I make plans for drinks and dinner with colleagues.

It’s nice to be on the other side.
